Bible passage

The death of Christ

In John 19:38-42 we read that Jesus was buried by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. As we turn into John 20, we read that this Jesus who was killed and buried, has now resurrected.

Resurrection is the act of bringing something that has/had ended, back into existence.

Do you know that when Jesus rose from the dead, there were a number of people who saw Him? In 1 Cor 15: 1-11, Paul gives his readers this list! One of the reasons why we as Christians can confidently say that Jesus rose from the dead is because people saw him!

Paul wrote this to his readers in Corinth because some of them believed in the death of Jesus but did not believe in the resurrection (1 Cor 15: 12-34). Infact in vs 17, Paul writes that our faith is in vain, if we do not believe that Christ rose from the dead.

Just as it’s important to believe that Jesus died for us, it’s also equally important to know and believe that Jesus rose from the dead for us, and is seated at the right hand of God.

And guess what… there is more to resurrection. Because we believe in Jesus’ death and resurrection, we too will be resurrected! Now isn’t that awesome to hear?! We’re not talking about ghosts! :) We are talking about a bodily resurrection. We will have spiritual bodies! Verses 35-49 tells us that we will have imperishable, glorified bodies raised in the power of Christ.

Why all this excitement about resurrection? In 1 Cor 15:50-58, Paul writes that by His resurrection Jesus defeated death. And through the resurrection of Jesus, you and I have this victory over death.

If Jesus rose from the dead for you and me, what difference should it make for your life and mine?

Think about this...

He rose from the dead that we might live a life of victory over our sins. 1 Cor 15: 57- Therefore we can boldly say, “Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. “

Pause for a moment and look at your life….do a spiritual heart check.

How does this resurrection truth impact your life? Knowing that you are going to be raised in Christ if you have chosen to believe in Him? How will you live your life differently if you are living to be raised again?

CONCLUSION: Let us move on to accept and experience the victory that Jesus obtained for us when He rose from the dead.

Remember these three points-

  1. Believing in the resurrection of Jesus makes a difference.

  2. We will be resurrected too!

  3. The resurrection of Jesus gives you eternal life in Him.
