Lesson & Activity Introduction

F-E-A-R, what is it ? The dictionary says, it is ‘an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain or harm’. All of us have fears, don’t we? Even grown-ups who are very strong and well-built have fears. In today’s theme we are not talking of such a fear. Fear of GOD as mentioned in the Bible, in such a verse as Proverbs 9 :10 “ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom…” and our memory verse for the day,

Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the Lord and honoured his name.
- Malachi 3:16

Fear means and includes, awe, wonder, reverence, respect, amazement and the emotion that knots your stomach and heart up when you are afraid.

Right now, the whole world is gripped with the fear of being affected by the Corona Virus because of what suffering it brings and the possibility that it could lead to death for many who are weak and unable to fight the virus. During this V.B.S. you are going to be given the secrets of how to live life without fear, fear of anything! How exciting is that! If you pay attention to all that is said from GOD’s word and believe and practice it, you will no longer fear darkness or death or failure or loneliness or friends deserting you or people or a weakness or sickness or a disability or any other fear you can mention.

The first of the secrets to a life of no fear, is fearing GOD. Most people in today’s world do not realise that GOD is around. They live life the way they want to and soon when troubles come, and believe me, they come to everyone, they are so afraid that they want to run away from their problems and some even from themselves :(

Even though some of us go to church regularly and read our Bibles, we haven’t paid attention to who GOD really is. Therefore, we have lived like those who are ignorant of GOD or ignoring GOD on purpose. So, unless we know who GOD really is, we cannot be in awe and wonder of Him, or respect Him or revere Him or even be afraid of who He is and what He can do to a sinful human race.

A few things about GOD that you can easily see and understand…

He is CREATOR - step out and see the morning sunrise or look up at the starry sky on a cloudless night or just look at the trees and plants around you. Look into the flowers they bear and the vibrant colours they dress up in, or the fruits they produce. All the trees and plants that give us these flowers and fruits are stuck in the ground, that to our eyes have nothing but sand and yet all of them produce such beautiful flowers and fruits. All the trees, as different as they are from each other, all produce the oxygen that all life depends upon! Who is the designer and creator ? GOD!

He CONTROLS the entire universe - He put everything in place and the Bible tells us that not one star goes missing from His sight! Not one star is lost! Not one hair from your head falls without His knowledge! Can you imagine that!

He is CONSUMING FIRE - Dangerous to play around with like fire. Check out Hebrews 12:29

So, if we choose to fear Him, make Him most important in our lives, do all that pleases Him and are obedient to Him in everything, then He is on our side. Even when we falter, when we choose to believe in Jesus, He is on our side and He will pick us up. He protects us and saves us at all times. By giving our life to Jesus His Son, we become GOD’s children and He, our Father. Our Heavenly Father will keep us from all harm. That’s why His children FEAR NO EVIL (Psalm 23)
