For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” - 2 Timothy 1:7

In Lesson 1 of this VBS, we learnt about “the fear of God”. We know that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. In Lesson 2 and 3, we learnt that for those who believe in Jesus and obey His commands there is no fear of Judgement or Evil.

In today’s lesson, we will learn about being “fearless of the future”. What does it mean to be fearless of the future?

Joshua 1:7,9

7“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.  9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Numbers 14:24

24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.

In the book of Numbers, we see God commanding the people of Israel to explore the land of Canaan which He promised them as inheritance. When the spies were sent to Canaan, all but Joshua and Caleb came back in fear of the people living in Canaan. In fear and bitterness, the people grumbled and rebelled. This brought on God’s wrath. As a result of their fear, all but Joshua and Caleb lost the opportunity to enter the promised land and wandered in the desert for 40 years till that generation of people died. Only Joshua and Caleb who had the faith to be fearless of the future entered the promised land.

The Fear of the Future  is a  lack of faith. The Fear of the future weighs us down, blindfolds us to better opportunities at hand and invites the wrath of God.

God calls us to be strong and courageous and to obey His word wholeheartedly because He has promised us that He will never leave us or forsake us and He has gifted us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
