Is being fearless of the future the same as “I’ll live for today”?   Living in the present is comfortable but impractical. Like it or not, the future is coming. Many approach it with Fear. That is perhaps one of the reasons why sooth sayers and fortune tellers thrive.

The doomsday bunkers are a classic example of the terror which the future holds and the extent to which humans will go to secure it.  The future evokes fear because it is UNKNOWN to  and UNCONTROLLABLE by us.  Our efforts to guess, project, predict, the future neither secures nor assures us.  If we do not KNOW the One who Knows and controls the future,  we will certainly KNOW Fear in its many hues.

COVID 19 outbreak is a classic example. The infection and mortality graphs are defying all preparedness. The projections and predictions are morbid. The economic impact assessments and GDP predictions are scary. Suicides have begun. Emotional disorders are on the rise as an invisible RNA continues to mock the experts. Tentacles of Fear spread as the best of human efforts fail to accurately predict.      NO God certainly spells KNOW Fear for the world today.

God KNOWS the  Future

God is eternal. He sees the past, the present and the future at the same instant. God says “I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come.”( Isaiah 46:10). He alone KNOWS the future.

God CONTROLS the future

Colossians 1:17 says  God is before all things and in Him all things hold together. Proverbs 16:4 says God works everything to its proper end. The psalmist declares  “My times are in your hands” (Psalm 31:15) Assuring the disciples of God’s protection, Jesus says not one sparrow will fall to the ground without the Father’s knowledge. (Matt.10:29). The One who created the universe by His Word will regenerate this fallen world to create the new heaven and the new earth. He holds everything in his eternal hands.

God can be TRUSTED with OUR future

“What about my  future?” you ask?  Talking about the futility of worry, Jesus tells his disciples to look at the flowers and the birds, and consider how God is providing for them in splendor. How much more Jesus asks will God be willing to do for us the crown of creation? God is ABLE to take care of our future. (Matt. 6:25-34)

Consider this God, who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? (Rom. 8:32). God is WILLING  / WANTING to take care of our future.

Paul had journeyed exciting paths with God before he made this declaration.  Paul tells the Corinthian church about it. Paul, powered by his genealogy and heritage persecuted Christians till He encountered the living Lord Jesus. Now he considers all that as rubbish. (Phil. 3:8). He is so sold out on Jesus that he has been jailed, been flogged 5  times, beaten with rods and stones, shipwrecked, has faced danger from every side and from all people, experienced hunger, cold, nakedness, sleeplessness and been in danger of losing his life several times. (2 Corinthians 11:22 -28) with no regrets!

Towards the end of his life, from a prison, Paul writes to the believers in Rome that God is able to work all things for good. (Romans 8: 28.) He is able to entrust his future here on earth and the life after death to this God. He is convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,  neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom. 8:38)

Our journey with God into tomorrow can be confident and Fearless.  It can be powered by the promises of God in His word, and by the example and experience of people who journeyed with God before us.

In the activities section you will find Bible references that you can consider and apply to various fearful situations (real or hypothetical) that you could encounter in your life.  But that is like tasting instant coffee.

Your real fearlessness will be built on a healthy diet of the word of God. Not a ritual reading but a feeding, chewing the cud, assimilating and being nourished by the word of God. Set apart a fixed time each day to “work out” your Spirit by studying the Bible.  We have given you Inductive Bible study notes to help you in this.

Would you like to entrust your unknown uncontrollable future to the God who Knows, Controls and Cares for your future?

Prayer : Dear Jesus how grateful we are that You ensure a safe future for us – here on earth and in heaven above.  Take away our anxiety and fear.  Help us to feed on your Word and find strength and encouragement each day.  Grant us the grace to be disciplined in the study of your word for our good.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen
