(Fearless for God)
Psalm 118:8-9 states that It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
However, in most circumstances we tend to trust men and get along with people. Going with the crowd somehow has become a part of our behavior. The Bible teaches us to choose right principles as opposed to trusting people. We are constantly afraid of what other people will think of us .. what will our friends think of me if I stood up for this cause … what will my parents think of me if I pursue this dream … what will my teachers think of me … what will my neighbors think of me … what will my relatives think of me … Frankly in many situations no one has the time to think of us…
Even, the Bible has a number of people as examples where they have tried to do something that demonstrates the fear, they have for people rather than the trust they have in God. Abraham lied to the king in asking his wife to be his sister in the eyes of the king since he was afraid of the king… he thought that the king would then kill Abraham and take her as his wife… Jacob was afraid of his brother Esau and made special arrangements before meeting his brother. King Saul was afraid of what the people would do and so he made the sacrifice himself without waiting for the prophet Samuel. The list goes on …
In the new testament we find Peter denying Jesus since he was afraid of the crowd (Luke 22:54-62). However, the same Peter makes a complete U-turn after the resurrection and the Pentecost.
The timid Peter becomes the leader (Acts 4:1-12) of the new sect that now proclaimed Jesus Christ as the Lord and Saviour – he makes a bold statement “then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.” (Acts 4: 10). In this session we shall see the secret behind Peter’s boldness. In fact, God calls each of us to stand for our Christian principles. In doing so we may have to pay the cost. But our Lord promises to provide us the needed strength.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Help me always to remember that you enable me to be fearless before men. Help me always to stand for your truth. Amen.
